No Nasty's handmade natural soaps and balms

Frequently asked questions

Q How are handmade soaps made?
A Our soaps are handmade using the traditional cold process method - we gently heat and combine Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Pomace Olive Oil and Beeswax (our soap base) to water and caustic soda (lye) once combined we then add essential oils, herbs and spices where required. Before it reaches you our soaps are poured in block form, left 72 hours to set, hand cut into bars, trimmed and then left to cure for three/four weeks until they are ready for sale. The curing allows the “saponification process” to continue which means that the lye evaporates leaving just the soap and no chemicals. You cannot make soap without using lye.

Q What is the difference between your handmade soaps and commercial soaps?
A Our handmade soaps once cured contain no nasty chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulphate/sodium laureth sulphate, propylene glycol, parabens or synthetic ingredients which have been linked to allergies and carcinogenic (cancer causing) properties. A high majority of commercial soaps have harsh detergent chemicals added to them because they are cheap, enhance the longevity of the product or the consistency and lathering effect. All of which can be done using natural non toxic ingredients but at slightly more cost. People over profit margins!

Q Why are handmade soaps more expensive than commercial soaps?
A Its simple. We use high quality, sustainably sourced organic ingredients. Our soaps are made in smaller batches to ensure quality and care plus they are handmade and therefore are labour intensive and cost more for that reason. . Commercial soaps are made by machine with cheap inferior oils, lower grade essential oils and chemical detergents (used as preservatives). Remember 60% of what you put on your skin can be absorbed.

Q How should I care for my handmade soap?
A As our soap is made from pure organic olive oil, free of any nasty chemicals there are a number of steps you can take to preserve the life of your soap. Don't let your soap drown in water, use a well drained soap dish to keep your soap dry. Use your soap within six months of purchase and store unused soap in a dark, reasonably cool location.

Q I have sensitive skin, can I use handmade soaps?
A Yes. In fact our handmade soaps are incredibly pure. All our soaps are generously formulated to be gentle, mild and long lasting and will neither strip away oils nor irritate your skin and have a PH level between 8 and 9. We use no synthetic ingredients. We use organic ingredients wherever possible and food grade oils and butters. Our essential oils are not only organic but are aromatherapy graded.

If you have extra sensitive skin then why not try our 100% pure olive oil castile soap.

Q What makes your baby soap and nappy balm ‘baby-friendly'?
A We use no synthetic ingredients. All our ingredients are organic and natural. Each ingredient has been specifically chosen its own soothing and gentle properties. All our essential oils used in our baby friendly products are of an aromatherapy grade. We use only a small % for their antiseptic properties. Each product is certified by a toxicologist and goes under strict testing to ensure that it is within the safe EU regulatory guidelines.

Q Is your skincare range natural and handmade too?
A Of course! We make all of our own bases. None of them have been pre-made by other sources. Most of our oils and butters are organic, along with our herbs and spices. Our essential oils are aromatherapy grade and organic where possible.

Q Do you use animal products in your soap?
A All our products are animal free. Some commercial soaps use Tallow (a form of animal fat) however none of our products are made with animal ingredients. Most of our products are vegan friendly however we do use beeswax in some of our soaps and balms, which is an animal bi-product. Don't panic though we list all our ingredients on all our products and on our website/leaflets so you know exactly what you are buying!

Q Are your products tested on animals?
A Due to cosmetic legislation we cannot claim that we do not test on animals unless our products and ingredients have been legally proven to have not been tested at any stage on animals. However, our products HAVE NOT been tested on animals. We are totally against animal testing and would not knowingly buy any ingredient that had been tested on animals. All our ingredients are sourced from fairtrade or sustainable sources and claim that they do not test on animals.

We test all our products on ourselves, friends and family members.

Q Can I recycle your packaging?
A Yes, all our soap packaging other than the labels (we are working on this) is bio-degradable. It can go on your compost!
All our glass jars can be recycled along with the aluminium lids. Or you can re-use your jars by allowing us to refill your pots!
